Tästä on kyllä hieman erilaisiakin arvosteluja vilahtanut. Kyseessä on siis tämä uusi “James Bond” malli joka on Verizonelle lanseerattu (mutta vastaa 8.3 5G puhelinta).

Enimmäkseen itse asiassa olen ihan myönteistä palautetta lukenut ja samalla olen alkanut pohtia olisiko seuraava puhelin Nokia Apple -vuosien jälkeen. Suurin kritiikki on yleensä ottaen kohdistunut käsitykseni mukaan korkeaan hintaan - mutta nyt sekin on jo laskenut kivasti. Miksi maksaa jotakuinkin 2x hintaa vain sen takia että omistaisi Applen. Enää en ole vakuuttunut.

Kuvaaja osoittaa miten T-MO on onnistunut käärimään itselleen huikeasti enemmän taajuuksia kuin muut. Paljolti kiitos Sprint oston.

Nokialle tämä luonnollisesti myönteistä sillä rakentaminen jatkuu tiuhaan tahtiin T-Mobilen kanssa. Nyt siis näyttää että Verizon hankkii suuren siivun huutokaupasta itselleen c-bandia jota Ericsson ja Samsung pääsevät rakentamaan. Toiveet olisivat että AT&T valitsisi Nokian omaan c-band projektiin. Voisi olla yhtiölle kilpailullisesta näkökulmasta järkevää toimia erilailla kuin Verizon, kenties…?

Osittain varmasti hyödynnetään jo olemassa olevien saittien tehtyjä päivityksiä, mutta c-bandin rakentaminen vaatii paljon uutta laitekantaa ja rakentaminen tulee kestämään vielä useamman vuoden.

Kauppalehden hiukan “viihdepainotteisemman” palstan negailulle kirjoitettu argumentointi myös tänne, mitä kautta Nokia voi saavuttaa tulosparannusta jopa ilman henkilöstön leikkauksia:

Sinänsä totta, että räikeällä tavalla Nokian todellista tilannetta kaunisteltin menneinä vuosina. Yksi ero on kuitenkin nyt: Nokia on tänä vuonna ensimmäistä kertaa IFRS-VOITOLLINEN sitten vuoden 2015.

Toinen juttu on se, tuleeko uuden organisaation myötä mahdolliseksi vähentää väkeä, ennen kaikkea niistä 14 000 työntekijästä, jotka vuoden 2021 alusta siirretään keskustoimintojen piilosta näkyville liiketoimintaryhmiin, jolloin liiketoimintaryhmän päällikkö (esim. Tommi Uitto mobiiliverkkojen osalta) tekee omat johtopäätöksensä vähennystarpeesta ja -tahdista. Toisin sanoen, voi olla että vuonna 2021 tulee jälleen IFRS-kertaeriä vähennysten seurauksena, toivottavasti viimeistä kertaa.

Samalla voidaan aprikoida, onko Nokiassa liikaa porukkaa. Ericssonilla on muutama tuhat Nokiaa enemmän töissä (lähes 100 000) vaikka se on aktiivinen harvemmassa liiketoiminnassa kuin Nokia. Silti Ericssonin tulos on kelpo tasolla ja huomattavasti Nokian tulosta korkeammalla.

Nokian kilpailukyky tulee kasvamaan aivan henkilöstön määrästä riippumatta seuraavista syistä:

  • Soc-osuus saavuttaa vuoden 2021 aikana 70% ja lopulta 100% vuonna 2022.

  • Lundmarkin mukaan tämänhetkinen osittainen 5G-jälkeenjääneisyys kurotaan umpeen vuoden 2021 aikana, minkä parantaa hinnoitteluvoimaa.

  • 5G-supersykli vahvistuu kaiken aikaa, mutta ohittaa Gartnerin mukaan 4G-investoinnit vasta vuonna 2022 eli silloin kun Nokian Reefsharkeissa on SoC-osuus 100%.

  • Nokian organisaatiota yksinkertaistetaan kun luovuutaaan sekä end2end-strategiasta että matriisiorganisaatiosta, mikä parantaa t&k-panostusten kohdennusta, asiakaslähtöisyyttä ja reaktioherkkyttä sekä selkeyttää vastuita.

Olet oikeussa, että tuloksella oli jo viime vuonna oikea etumerkki, vaikka 18 miljoonaa merkitsi EPS:nä 0,00 euroa, missä toki roimaa parannusta vuodesta 2018 jolloin IFRS-EPS oli -0,10 euroa.

Herbert Diess (VAG maksoi päästöhuijauksista massiivisesti) nälvi Nokiaa, sanoen että Volkswagenin tulee nopeasti muuttua, ettei siitä tule autoteollisuuden Nokiaa… kertoo mielestäni rajusta tyylitajun puutteesta… tyhmää!

NOKIA STRATEGY UPDATE POINTS TO HIDDEN STRENGTHS

Problems with planning and execution remain, and substantial changes and exodus of talent are likely a headwind. But Nokia has met challenges in the past. “Nokia has repeatedly succeeded at re-invention,” stated Raymond James analysts in their note. Hopefully, the company can do it again this time.

Kuvastaa hyvin kilpailun raakuudesta. Huawei on pelattu pitkälti ulos, ja muutama toimija jäljellä - silti kilpailutilanteissa keskitytään toisen painamiseen. Kyllä tästä tulee vielä kunnon Suomi-Ruotsi -peli. Aikanaan Suomi taisi johtaa 5-1 mutta peli päätyi 6-5 Ruotsille. Nyt lähtöasetelma on toisinpäin.

Itse kyllä pidän tuosta Uiton asenteesta. Ja ennen kaikkea hyvä että Mobile Networks on hänen käskytettävään. Taistelumielialan pystyy tuntemaan twiittien läpi - tarvitaan vielä jonkin verran aikaa. Mielestäni vaikuttaa että Forsberg on nyt Nokian puolella.

Nokia, Daimler and the CJEU: referral, appeal, decision?

A blueprint for future connectivity and AI patent litigation

In November, the Regional Court Düsseldorf considered if there were grounds to refer the Nokia vs. Daimler case to the CJEU

This bitterly-fought connected car battle between Nokia and Daimler has seen almost all procedural tricks that one could imagine in patent disputes. This includes anti-anti-suit-injunctions across the Atlantic, involvement of the EU Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office, and a full injunction win for Nokia weakened by a seven billion euro security deposit. Daimler and its suppliers challenged this, with a request to stay the enforcement of the injunction.

But the latest highlight in the Connected Cars saga was the referral of one of Nokia’s claims (4c O 17/19 over SEP EP 20 87 629) by the Düsseldorf Regional Court to the European Court of Justice.

Although Nokia has challenged the decision of the Düsseldorf patent court with an immediate appeal, the case is likely to land on the desks of the CJEU judges in spring 2021. The decision was apparently very well-coordinated between the two Düsseldorf instances in November 2020.

If the referral comes to pass, the CJEU judges must decide who an SEP holder must offer a licence in a production chain. Until September, Nokia only offered this to Daimler, but not its suppliers. Facing a potential CJEU referral, Nokia changed its strategy and offered the suppliers a licence.

If the referral is effective, the case would not only be the lead case for connected cars patents. It would be the lead case for future connectivity technologies and for SEP and FRAND cases in Europe generally. The war over connected car patents is still in full swing.

The Higher Regional court in Munich has recently stayed the enforcement of one successful claim by Nokia and another by NPE Conversant against Daimler. But if the Düsseldorf Nokia case is refered to the CJEU, the main battle ground is no longer Germany – it’s Luxembourg.

Ericssonin tarinahan olisi täydellinen, jos DSS toimisi lupausten tavoin. Se oli omakin oletukseni vielä vuoden alkupuolella. Tämä lame-DSS paljastui vasta, kun verkkoja saatiin tosissaan tulille. Erityisesti Verizon on hankalassa paikassa, sillä DSS:n käyttökelvottomuuden myöntäminen tarkoittaisi koko oman strategian ja 5G-kuluttajaverkon huonouden myöntämistä, verrattuna kilpailijoihin. Nythän DSS:stä on kuitenkin tullut vain yksi uusi 5G:n uskottavuutta syövä ominaisuus, vaikka tuleekin varmasti aikanaan toimimaan moitteettomasti.

Tavallaan piristävää tämä Uiton suoruus kommenteissaan. Tämähän ei ollut edes ensimmäinen kerta. Ei kai suoranaisia valheita tarvitse jättää huomioimatta ollakseen vain poliittisesti korrekti. Ja pitäähän niitä oikoa, sen sijaan että ne jättää elämään omaa elämäänsä. Pieni jabien jakelu Ericssonin suuntaan laittaa varmaan omienkin veren mukavasti kiertämään.

Mutta vieläkin toivoisin niitä Nokian omia menestystarinoita sen sijaan, että päästään tasoihin kilpailijoiden kanssa. Tai kommentoidaan kilpailijan sinänsä halveksuttavaa tapaa varastaa kaikki mahdollinen mainoskuvista lähtien.

Edelleen odotan jotain mullistavaa, mihin kilpailijat eivät pysty vastaamaan. Se olisi jotain se, eikä varmasti jäisi huomioimatta kilpailijoilta, asiakkailta tai sijoittajilta. Toivottavasti sekin päivä vielä nähdään.

Nokia selected by Thailand’s dtac as its first 5G partner

  • Nokia to provide 4G and 5G equipment to support low and high-frequency bands
  • Supports Thailand 4.0 digitization initiative

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has been selected by Thai mobile operator, dtac, part of Telenor Group, as its first 5G RAN partner in a three-year deal covering the North and North Eastern regions of Thailand. With this deal , Nokia plays a key role in ensuring that dtac’s network performance is fully 5G-ready, and enabling a faster rollout of new 5G services as demand grows.

Nokia has been in Thailand for over 30 years with the deployment of 2G, 3G and 4G networks and will now provide 5G connectivity that will support the country’s efforts to digitize as part of its ‘Thailand 4.0’ economic strategy. The deployment is expected to begin later this year with completion expected in 2022.

The deal, which is an extension of Nokia’s existing partnership with dtac, will see an accelerated large-scale deployment of 5G on low-band spectrum (700-900Mhz) and high-capacity mmWave technology (26GHz), as well as enhancements of the existing networks utilizing 2300MHz, 2100MHz and 1800MHz spectrum. This combination will provide superior coverage and faster data speeds to subscribers.

Nokia will provide its AirScale Radio Access solutions for 4G and 5G networks that will improve overall network performance while enabling dtac to deliver 5G experience with ultra-low latency and extreme capacity. AirScale Radio Access is an industry-first commercial 5G solution enabling operators to capitalize early on 5G. The deal includes digital deployment for faster time to market, as well as optimization services.

dtac will also deploy Nokia Software’s NetAct Cloud network management system, which delivers cloud-agnostic, best-in-class tools for troubleshooting, administration, software management and configuration management.

Nokia is a long-standing partner of dtac and has previously provided its first commercial 4G TDD network in Thailand. Nokia has also provided solutions from its IP/Optical portfolio to bolster its network including a software-defined network (SDN)-ready IP/Optical network.

Prathet Tankuranun, Chief Technology Officer at dtac, said: “We never stop improving our network and delivering better data experiences across a broad range of devices. Our current deployment leverages 5G-enhanced mobile broadband and 5G-ready Massive MIMO technology to bring improved coverage and higher data capacity to our customers nationwide.”
