Olennainen asia tuossa jutussa oli se, että Andy uskoo, että noista nyt esillä olleista ehdoista tullaan tekemään myöhemmin huojennuksia, jotka sitten antavat hyötyä PLUG:ille. Hänen näkemyksensä oli, että missään nimessä ehdot eivät voi enää tiukentua. Eli ei varsinaisesti mitään isompaa asiaa ollut.

High-stakes Treasury Department guidance for claiming hydrogen production tax credits under US President Joe Biden’s climate law has drawn the ire of Senator Joe Manchin, who said the “horrible” rules will make it too hard to qualify.
The rules, which Manchin said are expected to be issued next week, have been the subject of intense lobbying and deliberations across the Biden administration amid a fight over what sources of power can fuel the energy-intensive hydrogen production process.
“We are fighting it,” the West Virginia Democrat said in an interview Wednesday at the US Capitol in Washington. Manchin helped craft the hydrogen tax credit provisions of the climate law. “It doesn’t do anything the bill does. They basically made it 10 times more stringent for hydrogen.”

Plug Power, a US hydrogen company, told Energy Source that the recently leaked hydrogen tax credit rules were “unworkable” and threatened to pause projects in New York and Texas if rules proved too stringent.
“All the efforts that we put in to promote and build a hydrogen industry quite honestly would disappear if this [guidance] is as strict as they say,” said Andy Marsh, chief executive of Plug Power, adding that tax credit uncertainty contributed to its Securities and Exchange Commission warning last month that it could run out of cash within the next year.
Tässä Financial Timesin jutussa (julkaistu 14.12.) Andy sanoo suht suoraan että Plugin luoma vety teollisuus “katoaa” mikäli tax credit säännöt ovat niin tiukat mitä vuodetut tiedot säännöistä kertovat.
Samaan aikaa päällä oleva "going concern ja mahdollisesti jo tällä viikolla julkaistavat tiukat rax credit säännöt saattavat tämän Andyn lausuman myötä pistää Plugin osakkeen aikamoiseen turbulenssiin…

Niin, ainakin tulee kanta selväksi. Sehän on aidosti katastrofi, jos jenkeissä tulee tiukat säädökset vihreälle vedylle mutta löysät säännökset siniselle. Se on aivan selvä juttu mihin ne investoinnit menevät sen jälkeen. Panostaminen siniseen vetyyn on housuun kusemista talvella, sillä se ei ole se lopullinen end game. Sininen vety on varmasti tärkeä siirtymävaiheessa ja se kestänee kuitenkin pitkään. Mutta fossiilisista irtautuminen on se tavoite, jota tämä lainsäädäntö ei tue.
Jos tämä toteutuu näin, niin “luonnonystävät” idioottimaisella toiminnallaan ovat saaneet ajettua fossiilisten yhtiöiden asiaa blokkaamalla vihreän vedyn markkinoiden starttia. Idiootti ei kannattaisi olla ja vähän tuntuu siltä, että nyt on vähän höynäytetty kiihkomielisiä.
Eihän tämä välttämättä Plugin loppu ole, sillä yhtiöllä on myös polttokenno, vedyn nesteytykseen tarkoitettuja laitoksia ja traileri bisnestä. Varsinkin tuo nesteytysbisnes on kasvanut vauhdilla, ja jos sininen vety lähtee vetämään, niin kasvun voisi olettaa jatkuvan. Lyyseribisnes on vain osa tätä kokonaisuutta, ja niille löytynee kysyntää sekä Euroopasta että Koreasta. Hidastaahan se kasvua tietysti (ja rajusti), jos jenkit tipahtaa pois tästä kelkasta muutamaksi vuodeksi. Siksi olen juuri Plugista ollut kiinnostunut, koska heillä on koko ketju hallussa.
Se on selvä, että omia tuotantolaitoksia ei näillä säädöksillä kannata tehdä. Sitten pitää ostaa sitä sinistä vetyä veroalennuksien kanssa ja diilata asiakkaille…
Joka tapauksessa tilanne on otettava vakavasti ja seurattava mitä tulevan pitää.

The Hydrogen Fuel Station Chicken-And-Egg Problem, Solved
If you caught that thing about heavy-duty fuel cell trucks, that’s where Amazon is treading more cautiously. However, they have been making some moves in that direction. Last week, for example, Daimler Truck announced that Amazon would be among five companies to give its new Mercedes-Benz branded fuel cell truck a trial spin in Germany.
Walmart is another fuel cell forklift early adopter looking to decarbonize its class 8 heavy duty trucks. Last year the company issued a decarbonization explainer, in which it explained that the cost of hydrogen was presenting a barrier to stepping all the way up from forklifts to class 8 fuel cell trucks. However, Walmart has undertaken the intermediary step of testing a fuel cell truck that falls into the “yard truck” class, used for jockeying trailers around warehouses and other campus-type settings.
“The truck is manufactured by Capacity in Longview, Texas, and has a range of expected benefits including an operating time of up to 10 hours on a single refuel, faster refuel time and less dependence on the electric charging grid,” Walmart noted last year. “Plus, we can utilize the same infrastructure as our hydrogen forklifts while producing little to no emissions.”
“Same infrastructure” could mean the same fueling stations, much as Amazon foresees deploying its forklift fueling stations to accommodate other fuel cell vehicles.
Here Comes The US Fuel Cell Truck Fueling Station Network
In the same announcement, Walmart also threw in a hint that the cost of hydrogen would not be a limiting factor for much longer.
“In fact, it’s because of these benefits that we see hydrogen as an option for our long-haul over the road tractors – will have more to share on that soon,”
they said, somewhat cryptically.
Statements like these have led some industry observers to foresee that a fuel station network for hydrogen fuel cell trucks is already in the works.
Writing for Freightwaves last week, for example, reporter Alan Adler noted that the forklift fuel station networks of Amazon and Walmart could help support a nationwide fuel cell truck station network.
“It’s true that what exists is primarily dedicated to material-handling fuel cell-powered forklifts,” Adler observed, “But it is not inconceivable that some of those 120 locations where hydrogen is dispensed could form a backbone, or at least contribute, to hydrogen fueling for over-the-road long-haul trucks.”
Momentum seems to be building. The California company FirstElement Fuel, for one, has already jumped the fuel cell truck gun. On December 20, the company announced a 10-year deal to provide its fuel station in Oakland, California, to refuel fuel cell trucks produced by the US firm Nikola.

To date, Plug has collaborated with Amazon to deploy more than 17,000 fuel cells to replace batteries in forklifts in more than 80 fulfillment centers in North America. For most of these locations, hydrogen to power the forklifts is produced elsewhere, liquified, and delivered by trucks to an on-site storage and dispensing system.
For this project, Plug provided design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance services for the 1MW PEM electrolyzer and hydrogen storage—compatible with the existing refueling infrastructure and fuel cells already in use at the site. This is the first electrolyzer system installed and in use at an Amazon site.

Näin tämän tulkitsen. Ottaa käyttöön yli 17000 fuel cells akkujen/patterien tilalle yli 80:ssä keskuksessa.
Suunnittelee, ottaa käyttöön, ylläpitää näitä 1 MW PEM elektrolyysereitä ja vedyn varastointia.
Tämä on vähän omituinen ilmaisu: compatible with the existing refueling infrastructure and fuel cells already in use at the site.
Eli nuo 17t polttokennotrukkia on jo kentällä ja tositoimessa Amazonilla, sekä niille on jo olemassa tankkausinfra. Nämä kontti-lyyserit ovat yhteensopivia tuon olemassa olevan tankkausinfran kanssa.

Näistä 1-5MW konttilyyrereistä on kyllä tulossa Plugille jättihitti… Sekä tietysti PEM teknologia myös on ollut voittava valinta, koska se pelaa hyvin yhteen noiden uusiutuvien kanssa. Ja saa skaalaetua myös, joka on tärkeä juttu.

Amazon on kieltämättä iso toimija, paljonkohan tuo 17000 fuel cells sitten rahassa tarkoittaa? Edes suurusluokkana? Ilmeisesti tarkoitus nyt sitten ajella vedyllä kuljetuksia varastojen välillä ja sitten käyttää trukkeja varastoilla polttokennoilla.
Plugin suhteen olen edelleen aika skeptikko, mutta toki tälläiset uutiset voivat kääntää sentimenttiä paremmaksi (annin kannalta). Yleensäkin jonkun ison yrityksen pitää tehdä järjestelmällisiä investointeja alaan, että se saadaan oikeasti vauhtiin. Amazon on tähän tarpeeksi iso, antaa uskoa koko alalle.
Sivunotena, Cell Impact on toimittanut Plugille “flow plateja” polttokennoja varten, tässä syksyllä tuli tilaus 20Mkr (iso raha snagarille), tulisiko tästä uutisesta toivoa siihen risukasaan.
